THE Pedders Suspension 2017 Rally of Wowan was held over the weekend with great success.

Run for the fourth time, the event had 37 starters from 40 entrants coming from as far as Cairns, Darwin, and Brisbane.

Rally organiser Gordon Fisher said there was plenty of manpower ensuring the event ran smoothly.

"We had 100 officials deployed into the stages earlier in the morning to man road closures, radio points, spectator points and check points,” he said.

The ceremonial start was at the Commercial Hotel in Wowan, with cars leaving at two minute intervals, racing through eight separate special stages throughout the day.

"The event took its toll with just 27 of the 37 crews finishing, with eight cars suffering mechanical failure and two withdrawn from accidents,” Gordon said.

An ambulance was required to treat a driver in stage three.

The delay saw the last stage cancelled due to safety with dust problems late in the day.

Outright winners were Ian Menzies and Bob McGowan (2015 Championship winners) in a Mitsubishi Evo 9 with a three minute lead over second placed crew Tony Scott and Jay Davidson with their 1982 Toyota Corolla 2WD.

Third place went to Todd Webster and Ryan Preston in a Subaru WRX, one minute further back.

While the rally takes a lot of planning and preparation, Gordon looks forward to next year.

"All crews vowed to return next year, as they all list the event as a must do on the rally calendar, due to the great roads, the country hospitality, the after party and the general good feeling of the event,” Gordon said.

"The Wowan community looks forward to the event each year, as over 200 people camp at the showgrounds for the two nights.”
