Top OP student’s surprising advice

ONE of the state's brightest students at a top school has passed on his advice to Year 12s.

Former Brisbane Grammar School student Jianan Lin achieved an OP1 with a tertiary rank of 99.95, placing him among the highest-achieving students in the state.

He advised current senior students to just "keep on doing what you're doing".

"Our headmaster told each one of us that we should have no regrets at the end of the year - it means giving it your all and not slacking off - but no regrets doesn't mean spending all your time on studying," he said.

"It's also about remaining involved - cultural pursuits, it's your final year - it's about your mates, the group of boys you've been on your journey with and you're about to depart on your own walks of life and this is the last time you'll be together.

"So you have to enjoy that."

Set to study a Bachelor of Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne, Jianan hopes to become a doctor in the future.

"I want to use what I've learnt, my knowledge, to help those in need," he said.

He said his study routine involved creating checklists to ensure he wouldn't forget content he could be assessed on, while keeping on top of homework and assessments and extra study three to four nights a week.

Outside the classroom, he said he played cricket and football, and competed in cross-country.

"I feel like you just need a bit of fun in there, during what's supposed to be a pretty stressful year," he said.
