Toowoomba funeral for airman

A FUNERAL service for the Toowoomba pilot whose body was missing for 39 years in Vietnam will be held in Toowoomba.

Pilot Officer Robert Carver went missing during a bombing raid in Vietnam near the Laos border in 1970.

The remains of Pilot Officer Carver and his companion, Flying Officer Michael Herbert, were finally found on July 30 this year.

Jim Bourke from Operation Aussies Home said the repatriation of their bodies would happen later this month.

Mr Bourke said the Carver family intended to bury or cremate Pilot Officer Carver in Toowoomba.

He said a funeral service would be held at St Luke’s Church at a date yet to be set.

“The Carvers were originally from Toowoomba and both of Robert Carver’s parents are buried there,” Mr Bourke said.

“It’s their home town.”

Pilot Officer Carver and Flying Officer Herbert were the last two servicemen missing in action after the Vietnam War.

The wreckage of their Canberra bomber was found by the Army History Unit in April in Quang Nam province.
