Man threatened to kill mayor, stab staffers over buses

A MAN has faced court after making a series of disturbing threats to kill Gladstone Mayor Gail Sellers because of his frustration over a lack of bus services.

Anger and frustration over the lack of a bus service link between Benaraby and Gladstone is the reason Peter Midgely gave for him making a series of disturbing threats to kill Cr Sellers, and shoot and stab council staff.

Gladstone Magistrates Court heard that Midgely, 41, made 14 phone calls in which he threatened harm to council staff and the Mayor, saying he would get a knife to stab someone through the brain so they would realise how bad the Benaraby bus service was.

Midgely pleaded guilty before magistrate Penelope Hay to using a telephone service to make threats to kill another person with the intention to cause fear.

Prosecutor Snr Const Sam Pyke said the threats were made to an employee of agency Community Solutions Gladstone between January 14-17.

In police documents before the court Midgely stated the Benaraby bus service was "crap".

"I'm thinking about shooting and stabbing someone from the council... going in and stabbing them."

Midgely described people as "whorebags, clowns" saying "I want to kill the Mayor of Gladstone because you can't get a bus pass".

Defence lawyer Cassandra Ditchfield said Midgely was on a disability support pension and had little recall of his "alcohol-fuelled" threats.

She said Midgely had been engaged with helpers and mentors from the service and got upset after he no longer had transport to attend counselling.

Ms Hay noted his alcohol dependency, saying "there is no excuse for your threats to violently kill people".

"The threats are quite graphic and very concerning," she said.

She sentenced him to three months jail, immediately suspended for 12 months.
