'General' sets record at Thangool

JOCKEY Richard Hall rode a flying machine at the Thangool Races on the weekend.

Hall, riding horse number five General Curve in the last race, was faster than a fox escaping from a chicken coop with its next meal when he set a new track record at a blistering 44.17 seconds over 800m.

“I knew I was going fast,” Hall said.

“He's a natural speed horse.”

Thangool Race Club president Pat Brennan said General Cure was more than a quick horse.

“He's a flying machine,” Brennan said.

Hall said he had only ridden the horse a few times in Gladstone, where he had not gone too fast at the start in longer races.

“Being an 800 I was told to go hard - that will do me,” the jockey said.

He said he knew General Curve's connections well, knowing them for 15 years.

“They are like family to me,” Hall said.

Hall, a veteran of 25 years, started his apprenticeship in South Australia after he left his job at a bank,

“I told them to get somebody else as I wouldn't wear a tie,” he said.

Hall also rode in Victoria but in 1987 he went to Birdsville, before ending up in Caloundra and then Rockhampton.

Brennan said around 500 people flocked to the XXXX Hoteliers race day to see some strong racing.

The club's next meet is on May 30.
