Snappy start to season for Crocs

HOCKEY: Girl power is helping BITS Crocs rediscover its bite for the 2018 Gladstone Hockey Association season.

The club is in a rebuilding phase under the watch of new president Brenton Iszlaub, but if Round 1 results are any indication the Crocs are on course for a successful season.

BITS has teams in the A2 Women, A3 Women and Under-14 Mixed with all three grades opening the 2018 season with victories last weekend.

Crocs also field an U9s rookie team who received a Round 1 bye.

The opening round saw the U14s defeat Yaralla 5-2 with Summer Blackmore scoring four goals, the A3 Women beat Souths 3-1 and the A2 Women easily accounted for Meteors 5-0.

"It's a very good start and I hope it keeps going," Iszlaub said.

The former Meteors player has been involved with the club for three years and coached the A2 women in 2016-17 before stepping up to the presidency this year.

While the girls have been doing it for themselves so far this season, reintroducing men's teams and strengthening its juniors base is a high priority for Iszlaub.

"This yearly we mainly want to put some things in place so we can attack and get more numbers next year," he said.

"We want to boost our numbers and put forward whatever age groups we've got to GHA and find an age group kids can play in.

"In seniors we only had our A3 team back this year... We tried to chase a few men but couldn't get enough for a team, but getting a men's team back would be a good thing too.

"It's somewhere for our junior boys to go rather than change clubs."
