Slam dunk for basketball star in U16 rep side

BILOELA-based basketball player Owen Gardiner is proving himself to be one of Gladstone's best young guns of talent after a successful representative weekend.

Owen, 14, stepped up in the Queensland Central Districts Carnival Under-16 Division One playing against Rockhampton and Bundaberg.

Travelling to Gladstone three times a week for training and playing, Owen played some pivotal roles in last weekend's undefeated games.

"Every day for training on Wednesday and Friday and game day on Thursday I travel over to Gladstone,” Gardiner said.

"My dad (Tom) got me into basketball and I really enjoy playing it.

"The team trained really hard in the lead-up to the tournament and our coach, Ray Cooper, has pushed us hard to get us to where we are.”

Owen only started playing in the Gladstone competition last year but has been around basketball most of his life. Next year he wants to try out for the Gladstone under-18 team and aim for the Queensland representative team.

"I want to keep progressing with my basketball and maybe even play for the Port City Power when I get older,” he said.

Final results: Gladstone 93 def Rockhampton 62 (Gardiner 20 pts); Gladstone 71 def Bundaberg 51 (Gardiner 4 pts); Gladstone 93 def Bundaberg 76 (Gardiner 2 pts); Gladstone 69 def Rockhampton 63 (Gardiner 12 pts).
