Rural rugby on showcase at Paul Bowman challenge

JUST over a dozen young players travelled with coaches and parents to be a part of the 2019 Paul Bowman Challenge in Proserpine.

The Biloela JRL U9 squad was made up of 13 players from the Biloela Panthers, joined by a few from Moura, Theodore, Banana and the surrounding areas to take part in the statewide competition of U9s rugby league.

Coach Jefferson Middleton was proud of his squad who played eight games across two days (September 21-22).

"With the kids playing that many games in that short of time you could see the improvement throughout," Mr Middleton said.

"By the end of the carnival they were very impressive and I'm quite proud of the kids."

The Paul Bowman Challenge consisted of 80 teams all up, separated into eight pools of ten, with teams across Central, North and South-East Queensland participating.

The Biloela JRL squad finished fourth in pool eight with four wins from eight games.

"I'm really happy with the kids that travelled up," Mr Middleton said.

"I was impressed with the development they had and it will progress their football going into next year.

"I was impressed with how the carnival was set up to manage 80 teams and everyone, parents and kids included had a blast."

The Biloela JRL squad won games against Barcaldine JRL, Brothers Townsville, Centrals Tigers and Rockhampton Brothers.
