Roads, water and bridges key for council candidate

RESTANDING division 4 Banana Shire councillor Colin Semple is hanging his hat on his work to improve the quality and flow of water in the region.

As a first term councillor, Mr Semple is content with the funding he secured to improve the quality of the water in Goovigen and Wowan.

“More of our bridges are nearing end of use and more funding needs to be pursued for these,” Mr Semple said.

“Upgrade to the Don River bridge at Dululu and funding has been allocated by Main Roads to widen the Callide Creek bridge between Biloela and Jambin which will not only improve safety but with upgrade to the bridges will open the road train route from the Capricorn Highway to Biloela which would greatly help industry.”

Aware of what many residents believe to be a high cost of rates, Mr Semple plans to take the cost of rates into consideration come budget time.

“With the drought we have been experiencing, the cost of rates will be of concern to most people, this needs to be remembered when the budget is being formulated,” Mr Semple said.

“I will continue to promote the Banana Shire for tourism and have the facilities available to do this.”

With three retiring councillors and so far three confirmed council candidates, Mr Semple said that experience is the trump card when working in Local Government.

“Democracy is founded on choice and competition is healthy, however being a councillor is a big commitment and not everyone is able to give that time unfortunately,” Mr Semple said.

“As a first term councillor I am aware of how long it takes to familiarise yourself with the workings of the process and the roles of all the staff.

“I was able to lean on the experience of fellow experienced councillors at the beginning of the term, also their knowledge and background to decisions made in previous years which were relevant to matters which came to Council in this term.”

Mr Semple said if he is elected he will continue to represent residents of division 4 to the best of his ability and keep a fair and balanced view to the whole shire.
