REVEALED: The letter that sparked CQ council outcry

BYRON Shire Council has singled out Downer EDI as a boycott target for its involvement with the Adani project in north Queensland.

The council sent a letter to all local council in Australia calling on a boycott of companies that have dealings with Adani, which infuriated Isaac Regional Council and led to some return fire.

On November last year, the council resolved to not engage in services of Downer EDI or any of its subsidiaries until they publicly withdraw from their agreement with Adani.

The council also written to Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull about their decision and to 'express our extreme concern' about the impact of Carmichael mine.

"The mine's impact on two of Australia's most precious natural formations - Australia's largest groundwater system the Artesian Basin (under the mine's 60-year contract to extract unlimited water) and the Great Barrier Reef (with coal passing through Abbot Point terminal and required dredging to expand the terminal to accommodate for increased output)," the letter stated.

Lismore and Tweed councils in Northern NSW's Greens heartland have also passed resolutions late last year to boycott companies with links to the Adani project.
