'Really embarrassing': Police cop flak from drunk reveller

A DRUNK refrigeration mechanic arrested after reportedly starting fights outside a Mackay nightclub declared the affair a "waste of taxpayer's money".

Cody Jack Cocup had no qualms tussling with officers doing their job on the night of February 23, but come Wednesday in Mackay Magistrates Court he was much more subdued.

In fact, the 21-year-old told Magistrate Damien Dwyer it was "really embarrassing to hear" his actions detailed - including calling police "scum animals" and "f---ing pathetic".

Cocup pleaded guilty to public nuisance in the vicinity of licensed premises (Cartel Nightclub), obstructing police and contravening a police requirement to state his correct name.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Duncan Erskine provided Mr Dwyer with the facts of the case.

Cocup, who was "sweating and had no sense of personal space" had been "starting arguments" and was seen punching a wall about 11.17pm.

"Police had to physically push him away because he kept yelling and arguing with police ... ," Snr Const Erkskine said.

Cocup was given a "move on direction", but refused and was subsequently arrested.

Police had to wrestle Cocup for control of the situation as he yelled "what a waste of taxpayer's money to get me down here".

Cocup was eventually placed into a police van by force.

Speaking on Cocup's behalf, solicitor Geoff Govey (of Taylors Solicitors) said the young father had a "limited" criminal record and was "ashamed of his behaviour".

Cocup had cut down his alcohol consumption, the court was told.

Mr Dwyer fined Cocup $1200, ordered him to serve 40 hours community service and banned him from Mackay Safe Night Precinct until August 13.

No conviction was recorded.
