PREVIEW: Game of Thrones S6E9 Battle of the Bastards
TODAY is the episode many Game of Thrones fans have been waiting for as Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton prepare to face off on the battlefield.
In what is reportedly the most expensive episode of Game of Thrones produced so far, the battle for Winterfell will see Jon Snow and Sansa Stark's outnumbered forces attempt to reclaim the North from Sansa's treacherous husband.
Here are three key things to look out for in season six episode nine, Battle of the Bastards:
A showdown in the North
As episode nine's title not so subtly suggests, Jon Snow and Sansa Stark will meet Ramsay Bolton on the battlefield.
Most of this season has been building to this moment, which keeps in tradition with the big battle scenes that have previously featured in the second to last episode of a season.
Now that Snow's alive and has a ragtag army of Wildlings and other supporters behind him, can he retake Winterfell from the show's other infamous bastard?
A happy ending where a virtuous hero like Snow saves the day isn't very Game of Thrones.
Ramsay is known for being devious so expect him to have some sort of plan that catches the Stark/Snow forces by surprise.
To him it all seems to be one big game in which pretty much everyone is a disposable pawn. But perhaps his over confidence will come back to bite him.
At least Snow has a giant on his side!
Davos to lose something dear?
Ser Davos is apparently going to lose something dear to him in the Battle of the Bastards, but what could it be?
He is most likely to finally learn the truth about poor Shireen, Stannis's sweet daughter who taught him how to read.
She was burned alive by her father, on the advice of the red priestess Melisandre, in a desperate attempt to turn the tide of his ill-fated campaign for the Iron Throne.
When he learns of her horrific death will have a big impact on the former smuggler, who is Jon Snow's right-hand man for the battle.
If he learns of Shireen before the action, then it could either cloud his judgement or give him a newfound rage on the battlefield.
If he learns of her death after the clash, though, then it might make him question what he's fighting for and even inspire him to go after Melisandre for revenge.
Meereen under fire
The bulk of episode nine will be taken up by the battle for Winterfell, but according to the synopsis today's other key storyline will see Danaerys face a pivotal choice.
The Mother of Dragons was last seen returning to Meereen in typically dramatic fashion as her dragon Drogon dropped her off on the top of the pyramid.
Despite Tyrion's best attempts at diplomacy, the masters from the other cities in the east previously conquered by Danaerys have returned with a fleet of ships to attack the city.
Will she release her other two dragons from their underground chamber to face the threat or is she afraid they will cause too much collateral damage?
Game of Thrones airs today at 11am AEST on Foxtel's Showcase channel.
