Possums comeback trips at final hurdle

CRICKET: The Thangool Possums came agonisingly close to pulling off a last-minute comeback on Saturday, winning their final two T20 games to make event organisers reach for their calculators to determine who would go through to tomorrow's grand final.

The Possums' wins, combined with Monto's victory over the Dawson Valley Taipans earlier in the day, forced the series to a three-way tie, with Thangool, Monto and the Taipans sitting on two wins apiece.

Callide Dawson Cricket Association president Ray Stanley crunched the numbers on Wednesday, comparing the teams' net run rates.

In the end he determined that Monto and the Taipans would go through - eliminating his own Thangool team.

The Possums will face off against Teys Primed XI tomorrow at 2.30pm at Magavilis Sports Complex for third place, before Monto and the Taipans go head to head under lights at 5.45pm.

Thangool was clinical in its performances throughout round two, chasing down Primed's total of 115 with one over to spare thanks to an unbeaten 56 from Dan Hendrickson and a 32 from Stanley.

Against Monto, Luke Sketchley and Nick Cavanagh did the damage with the bat, both scoring in the 40s to propel the Possums to 6/130 by the end of the 20 overs.

They managed to keep Monto to 116 in reply, with only Craig Hampson (44) being allowed a real start.

Earlier in the day, Monto defeated last week's top performers the Dawson Valley Taipans in a low-scoring but lopsided game in which openers J. Parker (25) and S. Curtis (48*) did most of the heavy lifting.

The openers got the team to 1/68 before Parker was caught and number 10 C. Young was bumped up the order, guiding Monto to 1/106 by the end of the 20 overs.

The Taipans lost early wickets before the tail wagged and they limped to 8/94 - enough to ensure their spot in tomorrow's finisher.
