Police falsely accuse sporting legend of stealing sunglasses
ONE of Queensland's leading jockeys has been arrested at a Brisbane shopping centre and falsely accused of stealing sunglasses.
Jim Byrne, a top jockey for nearly 30 years, and whose mounts earned more than $5 million last season, was subjected to what he described as the most embarrassing moment of his life, at Westfield Chermside on Friday.
Mr Byrne said he was approached by two police officers while he and his family were having lunch at Chermside restaurant Motto Motto.
"They told us they had CCTV footage of us shoplifting four pairs of sunglasses ... and I said 'well pull it out and then you can let us go because it ain't us' but they wouldn't listen" he said.
