Banana Shire pay their respects

THE mood was solemn at Anzac Park, Biloela for Remembrance Day today with tributes and respects paid to Australia's servicemen and women.

A crowd of around 30, which included RSL members, Banana Shire Council Mayor Cr Nev Ferrier, Biloela Fire and Ambulance officers and members of the public, attended the 15 minute service to remember lives lost in conflict and the signing of the Armistice on this day in 1918 that effectively ended World War I.

Biloela RSL Sub-Branch president John Rathjen opened the service and he said it never got any easier speaking about war.

"We can't get up there and speak without having a quiver of the lip," Mr Rathjen said.

"It's a solemn day when you look at the fact that 60,000 Australians died."

The poem Flanders Fields was recited as a symbol of remembrance for those killed in service, followed by the laying of wreaths at the Biloela Centotaph.

Two members from the 5th Light Horse, based in Mt Morgan, also attended the Remembrance Day service in Biloela, while RSL Branches in Taroom, Moura, Theodore and Wowan all held services.

Mr Rathjen said that a movement to forego Remembrance Day from the Australian calendar would be a sad day for the country.

"There are ones trying to change the culture of this country and I just hope there's enough Australians around to never change the culture of the country because we are what we are," Mr Rathjen said.

"The Anzacs would be rolling in their graves if they saw some of these things happening these days."

Attendees and RSL members retired to the Biloela Anzac Memorial Club for refreshments after the service.
