A GLENDEN police officer saved a baby joey on Tuesday, after finding its mother who had been struck by a car and didn't survive.

Constable Nick Schmidt was conducting a patrol and when he noticed the kangaroo and went to move it from the road so that it didn't impact any motorists.

As he was doing so, the young joey stuck its head out of the mothers pouch to see what the officer was doing.

Officer Schmidt later learnt that joey's can survive up to 48 hours in the pouch of their mother after they die, and luckily for this joey it had managed to remain unharmed.

She was collected and driven in the police car back to the Glenden station where she was wrapped in a police jumper, the officer attempting to mimic her mothers pouch.

A local wildlife rescue carer was contacted and attended to help.

She will be properly cared for until she can be introduced to a mob of "rescue kangaroos" and returned to the outback.
