Joanna King has a natural kind of beauty and shuns the use of excess make-up or other "enhancements".

So it came as a slight surprise to her when her name was read out recently as the 2009 Ralph Australian Swimwear Model of the Year.

The 19-year-old Noosa model was chosen from 39 other national finalists, for a unique look she describes as "not the typical Ralph girl".

Miss King is preparing for national exposure as the cover star of the Ralph 2010 calendar.

"I've always wanted to do modelling and I just decided to enter the competition up here thinking, 'I'll just see how I go'," she said. "I still can't believe that I won."

Miss King was glad to hear the judges found her natural appearance more appealing than the "plastic" look. "I spoke to the photographer and he said they wanted to bring class to the magazine and they thought I was the perfect person," she said.

"It was good because when I looked through Ralph, I thought it's a bit raunchy, but when I did the shoot I was able to be more natural. I think that's more sexy."

Miss King has modelled for both catwalk and print and hopes her career will take her overseas.

"I love meeting new people so it's all such good fun," she said.
