YOU CAN count the number of students at Goovigen State School on one hand but for new Acting Principal, Nick Dangusch, that is not a problem.

Mr Dangush began his new position on Tuesday as school went back for Term two and is replacing Rob McCullough who has moved to Hamilton Island State School.

"It has been so nice, all the locals have been really welcoming,” Mr Dangusch said.

"And the students are really friendly and the families are so active.”

Originally from Brisbane, Mr Dangusch has been teaching in Townsville for the last few months.

"Coming from a school of 1,000 students it is a nice change,” he said.

"Nice change of scenery, change of pace and getting to more of that personal level.”

With five students from two families, the school currently has prep, year one, three, five and six in rotation.

"It is a much better learning environment and gives them better opportunities,” Mr Dangusch said.

"The multi-age class allows the students to do the next level or year grade if they are up to rather than being stuck on one level because 27 other kids aren't up to it yet.”

Despite the numbers, the resources in the school are more than plentiful.

"It is a well-maintained school with beautiful grounds,” Mr Dangusch said.

"We have so many resources from interactive whiteboards, iPads, computers and just general resources.

"It makes me ask myself why there is only five kids.”

Being a small school, the idea of the school being shut down by head department is always a worry.

"You think about it in the back of your mind,” Mr Dangusch said.

"And for me in my position, my goal will be to get more kids through the doors and show the community what we do here.

"It will be getting straight out there in the community and showing them how well the kids are achieving.”

Mr Dangusch has been teaching for around 10 years now and hopes to be sticking around Goovigen for a while.

"I have nothing but positive things to say about the school,” Mr Dangusch said.

"This is what I have been working towards for the past four years and it is great to be in charge of such lovely children and awesome families.

"I will be happy to call Goovigen home.”
