Moving on up: Seeney eyes federal seat

JEFF Seeney has confirmed he is looking to make the jump from Brisbane to Canberra, raising the possibility of a by-election in his seat of Callide.

The former Deputy Premier told the Central Telegraph he would seek LNP preselection for the federal division of Wide Bay, which is being vacated by retiring former Nationals leader and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss.

Mr Seeney's electorate of Callide partly overlaps with Wide Bay.

"I've been considering how I might best represent the people of regional Queensland since the middle of last year," said Mr Seeney.

"I did that at the local government level, I did it at the state government level, and it's now a question of whether I'm the best person to represent regional Queensland at the federal government level," he said.

Mr Seeney's focus on Wide Bay comes after he was left off Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg's front bench following the LNP's defeat last January after just one term in government.

Last week Mr Seeney was shifted from the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee to the Ethics Committee by the LNP, resolving a year-long stand-off after the Labor government's refusal to accept him as the committee chair.

The move also coincides with the ascension of Barnaby Joyce to the federal leadership of the National Party.

"There's certainly a very different approach being taken by the National Party regarding their role in Canberra at the moment, and I'm very supportive of that approach," said Mr Seeney.

Mr Seeney's decision raised questions for Banana Shire Mayor Ron Carige, who has been rumoured as a possible candidate for preselection if Callide were to become vacant.

But Cr Carige, who is seeking re-election, moved to squash any suggestions that he would be seeking to enter the state political arena.

"I'm 150% committed to my mayoral campaign," he said.
