IN A TOWN where many businesses are closing up shop, one new business in Moura is bucking the trend and welcoming in customers for the first time.

The staff are friendly, the design is modern and a sign next door says 'diner coming soon'.

A & B Bakery officially opened its doors on Wednesday morning - and by 12.30 had sold out of everything it had made.

"We were open by 4.30am, so it was just guys going to work mainly. Then about 7.30am it started to get crazy and it was just non-stop until we sold out," co-owner Andrew Fyfe said.

"(The Moura locals) are very excited. There's a big need for this kind of business here."

Originally from Monto, Andrew has previously run bakeries in Gayndah and Hervey Bay.

"My partner in the bakery is my ex-brother-in-law Barry Milne - he's from Banana and he said 'we need a bakery in Moura'," Andrew said.

"I'd worked here before about 30 years ago for John Lang when I was just 18, so I know the town. I've been through here a few times."

Andrew said the bakery would focus on getting the basics right - making good bread and good pies.

"We've had pie shops for many years," he said.

"The pies are always good-quality meat, we use the local butcher in town.

"Just good pies and good food... we will also be specialising in tiger bread."

The diner will soon be open for breakfast and lunch and will serve proper sit-down meals, including a bacon and eggs breakfast.

The business is already employing locals, with four casual staff plus the owner rostered on.

Andrew said he was confident the reception he'd received from locals so far meant the business would be around for a long time.

"I think it'll do well. It's a five-year plan at the moment," he said.

"I don't think it'll fail. I've never done anything that has yet."

A & B Bakery can be found on the Dawson Hwy next door to the (closed) former bakery.
