McCarthy squeezed out as Ewan claims stage win

A PUSH for line honours during yesterday's Tour Down Under halted Jay McCarthy's dream of another stage win.

The BORA-hansgrohe rider was among the lead group as he approached the end of the 148.6km stage at Stirling, the same place he claimed victory in 2016, his only TDU stage win to date.

Rival riders closed the gap, squeezing McCarthy out of a possible lead and forcing the Maryborough rider to recover.

"It's a bit unlucky,” McCarthy told the Chronicle.

"It would have been nice to have a run to the line. The plan was I go early and Peter, if he had to, would come off the other rider.”

FDJ rider Anthony Roux had a similar idea, but cut in front of McCarthy.

Mitchelton-Scott's Caleb Ewan powered to the front, and with teammate Daryl Impey checking McCarthy and his world champion teammate Peter Sagan, claimed the ochre jersey.

McCarthy finished third, with Sagan fourth.

"It's a shame but hopefully we have more chances in the next couple of days,” 25-year-old McCarthy said.

"(Thursday) it will be a sprint for Peter Sagan and Sam Bennett, (the) Friday stage is my next goal.”

McCarthy is now fourth overall, level with Sagan and 12 seconds behind Ewan. Impey is third.
