LATEST 9AM: POLICE believe Karlie Pearce-Stevenson was murdered almost seven years ago, while her daughter Khandalyce Pearce was killed some time later.
Investigators think the young mother died on September 14 or 15 in 2008.
Her killer used her bank card hundreds of times after her death and impersonated her to make relatives think she was alive and gain access to Centrelink benefits, authorities allege.
Detective Superintendent Mick Willing today said forensics experts had identified injuries to Karlie's body but were yet to determine their full extent.
"She sustained certain injuries to her body but I cannot go further into those injuries as the investigations are ongoing," he said.
"We believe Khandalyce was murdered at some point after Karlie but we are trying to establish the exact time."
Det Supt Willing said investigators "know others have knowledge about what happened to Karlie and Khandalyce" and urged them to come forwad.
"I know you all want answers about this… but we need time to get this right," he said.
A 41-year-old man was arrested at about 4.15pm yesterday and refused bail for alleged Ms Pearce-Stevenson's murder.
Police are yet to lay charges over Khandalyce's death.
5.52AM: Man charged over Karlie Pearce-Stevenson murder
A MAN has been charged with murder over the death of mother Karlie Pearce-Stevenson.
He was refused bail and is expected to appear at Maitland Local Court on Thursday.
NSW Police State Crime Command's Homicide Squad established Strike Force Malaya and South Australia Police's Major Crime established Task Force Malee to investigate the murders of 20-year-old Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and her daughter, Khandalyce Pearce.
Following extensive investigations, detectives arrested a 41-year-old man at Cessnock Police Station about 4.15pm today.
Ms Pearce-Stevenson's remains were found in the Belanglo Forest in NSW in 2010.
The remains of her daughter Khandalyce, believed to be aged about two, were found near a suitcase alongside the Karoonda Highway in South Australia's Murray Mallee earlier this year.
This week, police revealed someone had used Ms Pearce-Stevenson's bank card hundreds of times and impersonated her to access Centrelink benefits and bank accounts and to text her relatives to make them think she was alive.
Inquiries are continuing into the murder of the daughter.
Both Khandalyce and Karlie were reported missing in the Northern Territory in 2009 but police said the report was later withdrawn.
