Lions seal first win of year

JUSTIN Leppitsch has earned his first win of the season as Brisbane Lions coach and piled the pressure on his Carlton counterpart Mick Malthouse.

The Lions held on for a nine-point win at Etihad Stadium after taking control with a five-goal unanswered run from late in the third quarter.

Carlton looked like it might snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with late goals to Liam Jones and Tom Bell but some other missed shots cost the Blues in the 12.12 (84) to 11.9 (74) defeat.

Daniel McStay led the charge for the Lions with four goals, ably assisted by Josh Green with three.

Dayne Beams continued his strong start to the season, while Jack Redden was also impressive in the midfield.

Queenslander Bell was among Carlton's best with four goals.
