Level up for netballers

THREE members of the Biloela Netball Association undertook a major learning curve when they travelled to Brisbane for the U16 State Championships.

As members of the Capricorn Claws, Zali Middleton and Zali Eckel were under the tutelage of Biloela club coach Shari Hancock as they competed against Queensland’s best across three days. (September 29-October 1)

For the two Zali’s, the carnival was an opportunity to identify the level of skill and fitness required to make it at state level.

“Both of the Zali’s by netball standards are small in statue,” Hancock said.

“Both of the Zali’s would require a strength and conditioning program to work on their physical capability.

“They did however play very well across the weekend.”

The carnival marked the first occasion of Biloela players being selected in the U16 Claws squad which was also topped off with Hancock coaching the regional side for her first time.

“The side did well actually finishing as the top regional team in Queensland (7th) with only city based teams from Brisbane, Sunshine and Gold Coast finishing higher,” Hancock said.

“I was able to receive feedback from coaches and Netball Queensland whilst down there.

“It was a privilege to work with athletes at such a high level because a lot of the hard work is already done by their club coaches.”

Not only was the carnival a success for the development of netball in Biloela, but also for the wider Central Queensland region.

“We got two girls selected into the Queensland squad which made them the only two regional players to make the squad,” Hancock said.

“We have the technical skills to mix it with the best.

“It’s our fitness and endurance that let us down because we were unable to sustain the intensity needed for the full game.”
