Biloela kid has the name to race

JAKE Downs is quick like the V8 supercar driver  Craig Lowndes around a track, just in a go kart, not a Falcon - or from next year for Lowndes, a Holden.

The 10-year-old Biloela lad is being called “Lowndesy” by his dad Matt.

Downs, who recently moved from Moura to Biloela, may not be King of the Mountain like Lowndes, but he is “king of the karts”.

The speedy  boy is nearing veteran status in the rookie racing circuit, having first climbed behind the wheel of his kart when only six.

Downs had his biggest day in the race suit back in June when he won the Mackay Sugar City Rookie Title.

The victory might have been helped by the fact that he felt as if he was at home - because he was.

Before moving to Moura, the Downs family lived in Mackay.

Not surprisingly, this young racer rates his former stamping ground as his favourite track.

A victory will do that for you!

He has a very tight-knit pit crew - dad Matt heads it as chief mechanic and mum Shannon and sisters Krystal (12) and Kaitlyn (7) all support him during his races.

Downs had more success at Rockhampton at the weekend, finishing third for the round, which was a three-race event. Practice is rare for the young speedster, with the nearest tracks in Rockhampton and Gladstone.

Travel does limit his racing, but he competes every second weekend.

The family has hit the road to Townsville, Ipswich, Sunshine Coast and even Wyalla, SA and Darwin.

The young racer drives a Protégé kart given to him by Pacific Kart Sports.
