Injured rider awake after spinal surgery

AUSTRALIAN speedway rider Darcy Ward was in a stable condition and breathing unaided after spinal surgery in Poland, but details of his injuries were not made public.

The 23-year-old former two-time junior world champion suffered serious spinal injuries when he crashed while riding for Polish club Zielona Gora on Sunday.

Fears were immediately raised when he said he had "no lower body feeling".

Club doctor Robert

Zapotoczny told a press conference Ward was "conscious and able to answer simple questions" following the surgery.

"Darcy is able to execute simple actions, and recognises other people," Zapotoczny said.

"There will be no further information or details about his injuries."

The Queenslander started his overseas career in

Poland as a 17-year-old in 2009, and has also ridden extensively in Britain.
