THE feature results didn't go his way but Saturday's program of racing wasn't a total wipe-out for top trainer Tony McEvoy.
McEvoy's talented two-year-old Crockett was a well-beaten second behind boom youngster Ef Troop in the Phelan Ready Stakes at Doomben, fellow two-year-olds Sanctimonious and Logan River ran fifth and sixth respectively in the $500,000 Inglis Nursery at Randwick and highly rated three-year-old Vinland didn't fire as a short-priced favourite when fourth to improving South Australian galloper Angelucci at Caulfield.
But the tough win of progressive mare I'm A Princess in the Goldin Farms Handicap at Morphettville should have helped soften any pain from those defeats.
As well as enhancing the reputation of the richly bred I'm A Princess, a sister to $3 million winner Shoot Out, the victory also earned McEvoy a $10,000 bonus for preparing a winner at four consecutive Saturday Morphettville programs. It's the second time this season that the Angaston horseman has achieved the feat.
It was a confident ride by leading jockey Jason Holder, who sent I'm A Princess ($2.90 fav) forward from her wide draw to sit outside the leader Knightoftherealm before surging to the lead rounding the home turn.
Classy mare Pretty Punk ($3.40) loomed as a strong challenger halfway down the straight but I'm A Princess found plenty in the run to the line to win by a length.
"She's only going to get better when she gets over more ground and with a bit more maturity," stable spokesman John Cornell said.
I'm a Princess, a Sandown winner at her previous outing, is certainly building an impressive record. Saturday's win was her fourth from just 10 starts, with earnings beyond $80,000.
"Tony doesn't like stopping with mares when they're in form so perhaps he'll find a nice race for her in Melbourne over the summer.
"Being bred the way she is, it'd be nice to pick up some black type with her at some stage and add even more value to her as a broodmare."
