How school's stack up

THE results are in and it's time to see how students and schools went in their NAPLAN testing.

St Joesph's Catholic Primary school was the standout performer in the district, claiming the title of Central Queensland's most improved Year 5 cohort, improving their average score by 30.9 points from Year 3 to Year 5.

Catholic Education - Diocese of Rockhampton, Director Miss Leesa Jeffcoat said this year's data showed mixed results across the testing areas and across year groups.

"The release of the preliminary data from the 2019 NAPLAN testing provides one snapshot of how students are progressing in their learning,” Ms Jeffcoat said.

"The Queensland data shows some encouraging trends, particularly in Year 3 Reading and Year 5 Writing results.

Moura State High also featured on Central Queensland's most improved Year 9 cohorts with a 9.8 point increase from Year 7 to Year 9, clinching 5th spot on the most improved list.

Biloela State School achieved mixed results in their Year 3 and 5 cohorts.

Biloela State School's Year 3 cohort achieved the state average in Numeracy, Grammar, Spelling and Writing and below the state average in Reading. Their Year 5 cohort achieved slightly below the state average in the 5 testing categories.

Biloela State High School's Year 7 cohort achieved slightly below state average across the 5 testing categories whilst the Year 9 cohort faired a little better, managing to achieve state average Numeracy.

Ms Jeffcoat said that NAPLAN isn't the the only measuring stick that students, parents and schools should use to track how they are progressing.

"Any parents or carers with concerns about a student's progress should talk to their teacher to get the best understanding of student progress,” Ms Jeffcoat said.
