Holy cow I’m lucky to be alive

ODETTE Sweeney shut her eyes tight and braced herself as shattered glass sprayed towards her face.

It was a lucky escape for the 29-year-old who walked away with only scratches and bruises after narrowly avoiding the hoof of a cow in a crash on Booral Rd at River Heads.

Odette has spoken out about the horrifying accident she was involved in on her way home from night shift last Friday.

A good Samaritan, Josh Finlay, was the first on scene and approached the Chronicle through Facebook searching for the woman involved to ensure she was okay.

Odette said she was left shaken, but felt lucky to be alive and wanted to thank Josh from the bottom of her heart.

"I feel bad that he (Josh) saw me in such a mess," Odette said.

Odette was travelling along Booral Rd on a wet night and had lowered her high beams after a vehicle overtook her.

Odette said she briefly saw the cattle moments before the crash and sat back bracing herself for the worst.

"The cow's rump and hoof smashed on to my windscreen, its leg was stuck in my window," Odette recalled.

"It was pretty horrific, glass was spraying, I had glass in my eyes and mouth," she said.

Josh said when he arrived on scene; Odette was clearly in shock and "lucky to be alive".

"I drive a larger vehicle and had I have been a few minutes earlier, it would have been me," Josh said.

He explained that due to the size of her car, it allowed the cow to roll up her bonnet and reduce the impact.

"In a vehicle like mine I would have hit it head-on with a full impact," Josh said.
