Heroic boxer protects girl, 5, from attack

A MOTHER and her children had no answer when an aggressive terrier cornered them on a Marian street - until Rocky the heroic boxer came to their rescue.

Christine Pilchowski collected her children from a friend's house on Tuesday afternoon and on the walk home her five-year-old daughter Jazmine excitedly ran ahead.

Turning a corner, Jazmine burst into tears and ran back to her mother screaming, with a dog in close pursuit.

"A little terrier was chasing her quite viciously," Ms Pilchowski said. "I had an umbrella and shoved that in the dog's face.

"I had myself between the dog and the kids and we were at a bit of a stalemate. We weren't moving anywhere, the dog was barking and my daughter was screaming."

Without any options, Ms Pilchowski was unsure what to do, until the boxer, Rocky, came along and backed the terrier against a fence.

Ms Pilchowski said Rocky was calm and didn't respond or bark back.

"The terrier was still barking, but the boxer just cocked its head," she said.

"It just stood there showing no aggression whatsoever, but was very much in control."

While Rocky had the terrier pinned against the fence, Christine fled home with her children, Jazmine was still shaking from the experience.

Rocky's owner, Michael Pittman, said his dog hadn't had specific conflict training but had been handled a lot by the breeder and their children at a young age.

"He's a really playful dog and I guess he just sort of knows when people are in trouble," he said.

Ms Pilchowski said she was grateful Michael passed by when he did and Rocky is now her daughter's hero.

Since the incident, Jazmine had had nightmares and had been acting "funny" around dogs, Ms Pilchowski said.
