Pilot was well respected in Barcaldine community - reports

10.30am: THE name of the man who lost his life in a helicopter crash near Barcaldine last night is reported to be Michael Wills.

Southern media outlets have reported Mr Wills was a respected drover who had had the helicopter for only a short time.

8.20am: A HELICOPTER crash near Barcaldine in central-west Queensland has claimed the life of a 47-year-old man.

Police said the helicopter came down about 8pm on Monday night.

The pilot was the only person on board.

Emergency crews were at the scene 40 kiilometres west of Barcaldine.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Workplace Health and Safety and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau are investigating the crash.
