Orchids a lasting gift for mum

THE great thing about the orchid, apart from its obvious beauty, is the fact that the flower lasts for up to six weeks.

That's why orchids are becoming popular as Mother's Day gifts.

Nev Ludwick has been growing the beauties for many years and has become something of an expert, along with fellow members of the Gold Coast Orchid Society who will sport their prize winning plants at The Pines Shopping Centre, Elanora on May 5-7.

“We will be on hand to advise people on how to look after their orchids and how to grow them,” Mr Ludwick said.

Orchids like bush-house or shade-house conditions.

They don't like direct sunlight and require a little fertiliser.

They only need water twice a week.

“The lasting quality of orchids makes them popular,” Mr Ludwick said.

“When you buy a bunch of flowers they only last a couple of days and it's not a pretty sight to see them wither. The orchid is a permanent gift. It also makes them better value for your money.”

The variety is staggering, as is the beauty of the orchid.
