ROLLING UP: Thangool Race Club’s first race meet of the year promises to be a great day out.

Getting back into the swing of racing

THE RACING season continues into the new year with the Thangool Race Club preparing for the Australia Day racing meet.

The five-race meet will be held the day before Australia Day with Thangool Race Club president Pat Brennan anticipating a healthy crowd.

“We’re likely not going to get the huge crowd we had last year when these races fell on Australia Day and the Shire’s celebrations,” Mr Brennan said.

“We expect a good crowd regardless.”

Mr Brennan said he and the club relish any opportunity to show off the club’s facilities to patrons, particularly the upcoming $23,000 upgrade of the betting shed.

“Later this year before Thangool Cup Day our betting shed will have two more bays put on, increasing the total size of the area by a third,” Mr Brennan said.

“That means nobody will sit in the sun and we won’t have to put up as many marquee areas.

“It’s already to start construction with our contractors Fitzpatrick Construction and Ranbuild Biloela and with approval from council.”

In the midst of a scoring summer, Mr Brennan is hoping for some pleasant weather on the day to entice the largest crowd possible.

“If it’s really hot in the summer the crowd won’t turn up,” Mr Brennan said.

“And in the winter if it’s cold they won’t come.

“You’re in the lap of the gods.”

Gates open at 11am from the Thangool Race Club at Meissner’s Road Thangool with buses to shuttle patrons to and from the venue.
