THE long-awaited Banana Shire Art Gallery is on the drawing board in the architect's office and the draft plans are under review to ensure this component of the new office complex will have space for art exhibitions as well as house the shire's extensive collection of artworks.

Mayor John Hooper opened the Brigalow Arts Festival 2009 with this long-awaited but very welcome announcement. The resounding applause from the opening night audience demonstrated the enthusiasm and relief shared by all.

This exciting news certainly added extra sparkle to a very exciting array of art hanging on the walls, sitting on the tables or standing on the floor.

It was a pleasure to see entries in every section that uphold the high standard of art in this regional centre.

Judges Lucja and Ross both commented on the 'giving of themselves” that artists must do if they are to exhibit art in a public place. Everybody who has the opportunity to visit the Festival while it is open until Friday morning cannot help but share in this offering from the artists in every field.

The Callide Mine Art Scholarship was awarded to Olga Bath by Damien Parkins, Callide Mine.

Olga has progressed quickly on her journey in art and the prize gives her the opportunity to attend a prestigious art workshop which will be of great benefit to her.

Maria Wiley took home first prize in the Open Section 1 with a very colourful abstract that caught the judges' eyes.

In the well-supported photography section Sharon Gallagher took out first prize with a humorous look at the washing line that demonstrated her technical expertise in creating art in this popular medium.

Three-dimensional works are varied and interesting from some elegant small pieces to others of significant scale. “You can't miss it” is an often used term but in the case of “Dino the dinosaur” this is true! Go talk to him, give him a pat, he will love to see you.
