DESPITE a push by mining giants towards 100% fly-in fly-out (FIFO), there are still jobs in the industry for locals and drive-in drive-out (DIDO) candidates.
Recruitment companies advertising those jobs online maintain they are better for both the workers and the regions.
Lacoa Workforce director Paul Nagle said large contractors that serviced these regions had found the margin for FIFO had decreased and now were advertising for local applicants only.
Mr Nagle said when the boom was on, he was pro-FIFO, but since the downturn he was now behind a push for more DIDO workers in the region.
"There was such a big push to build, which was only going to be an issue for sustainability in the future," Mr Nagle said.
He said the simple fact that local and DIDO workers were spending their money in the towns had a flow-on effect, helping support the local economy.
Electricians, boilermakers and fitters are the most common trades seeking local applicants, he said.
"A lot of contractors are looking for more DIDO... mechanical and electrical engineers have increased as well, it's more cost-effective these days," he said.
A representative of engineering company RCR Tomlinson Ltd said it always tried to employ local contractors because it was better from a business point of view.
"It's better for the local community and ultimately better for the client, it makes good sense in every way," the representative said.
Mr Nagle said the drop in rent in places like Dysart and Moranbah made it possible for entire families to live in these centres, rather than opting to be FIFO.
Bowen Basin community advocate Jim Pearce said he wanted to see genuine commitment from contractors to hire locally, rejecting FIFO jobs that require workers to live in south-east Queensland.
Mr Pearce stressed that workers in the region needed to be looked after first.
