NETBALL: Australia's netballers have elected not to strike this weekend but have vowed to stage "some form of protest" after Kathryn Harby-Williams missed out on a position on the Netball Australia board.

Players from the Super Netball competition had threatened to boycott international matches, walk away from their club contracts, create a rebel league and even strike as soon as this weekend if former Australian captain Harby-Williams was not re-elected to one of three vacant board positions.

Harby-Williams' position on the board had been under threat from state member organisations, being led by Queensland and New South Wales, who the players believe are trying to recoup more power.

The Australian Netball Players' Association issued Netball Australia with a strongly worded letter this week, saying that it was a "non-negotiable position" that Harby-Williams be re-elected.

But its worst fears were realised when Harby-Williams was overlooked at the AGM.

With the threat of strike action avoided, the Queensland Firebirds will be out prove their finals credentials against the West Coast Fever at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday night.

The reigning ANZ Championship title holders are one point outside the finals spots with six weeks of the regular season to play.

"The Easter break was a good time for the team to draw a line in the sand and assess where we are at at this particular point in the season," Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke said.

"Starting this week we're able to focus on the next six rounds, begin searching for those small improvements and look to start pushing the top teams.

"We want to improve on our first-half performance, play consistently across four quarters and have better decision making when using the ball."

"We've felt that we have been wasteful at times and often been our own worst enemy in wanting to play a fast-paced game when it's required something different."
