Feel the passion

IT'S nearly Easter and what better time to plan a trip back a couple of thousand years to find out what life was like for Christ?

Only once every 10 years will you get the chance to witness the remarkable Oberammergau Passion Plays, a series of inspirational performances paying tribute to the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

While Oberammergau doesn't necessarily slip from the lips of “places I must visit before I die”, this Bavarian city is in the heart of some of Germany's most scenic landscape - and 2010, the next Passion Play year, gives one of the best reasons to visit.

The spectacle is something people remember for the rest of their lives.

The play's origins date back to 1633, when the Oberammergau community found itself under threat from the Bubonic plague - the town pledged that if God were to spare them, they would perform a play each decade to celebrate the life and death of Jesus.

Thankfully the vow appeared to work, and the locals were true to their promise.

Albatross Travel is planning five escorted tours with frequent departures throughout the Passion Play months from May to October.

Guests will spend two nights in the Oberammergau area and enjoying premium seats (category 1A) for the Passion Play performances.

Tours start from $2889 for a six-day program through to a mammoth 18-day effort for $8989.
