Father’s murder case referred to mental health court

A KIN Kin man charged with murdering his son has had his case referred to the Mental Health Court.

Shane Purssell Akehurst is charged with torturing and murdering his son, Corby, who was about to turn two years old.

It is alleged Mr Akehurst repeatedly threw his son against a timber bed in March this year when the boy would not stop crying.

Mr Akehurst has also been charged with assault offences.

In a brief mention at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday which lasted for about two minutes, his case was adjourned.

Mr Akehurst did not appear but a Legal Aid lawyer acted on his behalf.

The court heard the magistrate had received a letter from the West Moreton Hospital and Health Service and the case was referred to the mental health court.

The prosecution also asked for the case to be adjourned for three months.

The case will be mentioned at Brisbane Mental Health Court on December 3.

Mr Akehurst was remanded in custody and did not apply for bail. - APN NEWSDESK
