Families love Bilo small schools

BIGGER is not better if you listen to some of the parents that send their children to Mt Murchison State School.

Kath Franklin, who lives in Biloela, sends two children to “Mt Murchy”, as it is nicknamed, 10km east of Biloela.

Kath has a son in Prep and a daughter in year 2.

“The smaller class sizes are great and if any problems you can talk to teachers and you can deal with it straight away,” Kath said.

She said her daughter was struggling at her previous bigger school with reading, and after two months at Mt Murchy they did a behavioural eye test that found she needed glasses.

“They’re unbelievable,” Kath said of the small school’s staff.

Another Mt Murchy parent, Leeanne Davis, agreed with much of Kath’s sentiments.

“The teachers get to know the children and their parents,” Leeanne, who has a son in Year 1, said.

“There is more one on one with teachers and teacher aides.

“The school can pick up any difficulties the students may be having,” she said.

Leeanne said she had a child go through a bigger school.

“They slip through the system.

“Not only mine but other children I know as well.

“Once a child slips through one grade that’s it, they get behind and don’t pick up for all of their education. That’s when they get into bigger trouble further down the line,” Leeanne said.

She said parents thinking of sending their child to a bigger school should check out small schools as they had a choice.

Leeanne also disputed that the SMS that said bigger schools would get more money if small schools were closed.

Mt Murchison needs only three more enrolments to end any worries about keeping its second teacher.
