POLICE say they found a 55-year-old Granite Belt man hiding behind a rock in long grass after fleeing officers in Stanthorpe's CBD.
Stanthorpe police officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said police tried to intercept the Bapaume man after he was noticed driving at speed through the town's 40kmh CBD zone about 8.30pm Saturday.
"The offending vehicle drove around the police vehicle before travelling at speed into Folkestone St," Snr Sgt Ireland said.
The car was found abandoned in Anzac St a short time later.
"About 20 minutes after the vehicle was located, he (the suspect) was found lying down behind a rock in long grass."
Snr Sgt Ireland said there was a brief scuffle with police before the man was arrested.
He said the man appeared to be intoxicated.
The man was charged with dangerous operation of motor vehicle, failing to stop, obstructing police and failing to provide a blood specimen.
His car was impounded.
The 55-year-old man is due to appear in Stanthorpe Magistrates Court on May 21.
