Kindy escapees run onto 70km/h road

TWO children who fled a childcare centre in Melbourne's west yesterday morning are lucky to be alive - after they ran out onto a busy road towards oncoming traffic.

Horrifying dashcam footage of the moment, obtained by The Age, shows the kids running from a traffic island on Ballan Road, Werribee, where a sign clearly shows the speed limit is 70km/h.

As they run out towards oncoming traffic at about 10am, motorists can be seen screeching to a stop and one driver jumps out of his car to help.

He walks towards the children before safely helping them off the busy main road.

Both children were unharmed.

The Age reports the children escaped from Werribee West Family Centre, which has declined to comment to the newspaper.

It's understood two workers from the centre later collected the children and took them back to day care.

Victoria Police has no record of the incident, but the Department of Education and Training is now investigating.

"The health and safety of children in early childhood centres and schools is of utmost importance," a DET spokesman said in a statement.

"As the regulatory authority, the Department of Education and Training investigates incidents where children are unsupervised while attending early childhood services.

"The department has commenced an investigation after being notified of an incident involving children at Werribee West Family Centre on Tuesday, 12 March.

"As the matter is being investigated, we cannot provide further comments."
