THE quick-thinking of passers-by helped save an elderly woman in her 70s from drowning.

Queensland Ambulance Service operations manager Rick Tenthy said the woman's car came off the Elliott River Bridge at the intersection of Coonarr and Goodwood Rds on Wednesday afternoon.

"The car dropped about three metres and has ended up upside down in the water and she's found herself under the water," he said.

"But for the quick actions of passers-by, who stopped and removed her from the vehicle, and from beneath the water's surface, she would certainly have lost her life."

He said the ambulance and fire service received numerous 000 calls in relation to the crash.

Paramedics stabilised the woman - who sustained significant injuries to her arms and chest - before transporting her to Bundaberg Hospital in a serious condition.
