UPDATE 3.15pm:

FIREFIGHTERS had to put out a car fire at East Point by hand after they were unable to get their fire trucks down the sand track, off East Point Drive.

The QFES fire crew was called to the car fire at 2.30pm but once they arrived realised the trucks wouldn't travel the 1.3km down the sand track.

Station Officer Geoff Diamond said firefighters had to shovel sand and use beaters to extinguish the vehicle fire and grass fire around the car.

It is believed the car is a white Ford Ranger.

The fire was now out but the tyres were expected to smoke for a while, a QFES spokesperson said.

Earlier today Mackay Police reported a white Ford Ranger had been stolen from an Ooralea address.

It was stolen shortly after 9pm on July 14. At 10am on July 16, the stolen car had been driven to a service station on Nebo Road in West Mackay, police said.

EARLIER 2.30pm:

A CAR is on fire at East Point, Mackay and firefighters and police are on scene.

Initial information is that it is a White Ford Ranger, and it is about 1.3km off the main road.

Two fire crews are working to extinguish the blaze.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said there was no information at the moment about whether a person was inside or injured.

The emergency call was received about 2.20pm, with reports of black smoke coming from a vehicle.

When firefighters arrived on scene the car was alight.
