Matt Campbell wins easily at Porsche Carrera Cup

UPDATE 2.04PM: MATT Campbell has recorded his first race win in the Porsche Carrera Cup at Sydney Motorsport Park today in round 5 of the series.

The promising young Warwick driver was second in both practice sessions on Friday and then third in qualifying this morning in a time of 1:29.64, .31 behind winner Shae Davies.

Campbell won race 1 today in a time of 26:19.2333 which was three seconds faster than second placed Foster. Well-known race driver Steven Richards was third.

His fastest lap was 1:31.5964, a quarter of a second faster than the next best.

Campbell's previous best finishes in the first four rounds this season were two fourths and going in the Sydney round, he was 10th in the series. He is part of the McElrea Racing team.

Campbell was fastest in qualifying in the Ginetta he is co-driving with Michael Hovey in the Australian GT Championships today at Sydney Motorsport Park. He is in two classes this weekend.

The GT and Carrera Cup races are being held on the same program as the V8 Supercars.

EARLIER: WARWICK driver Matt Campbell has recorded two seconds in practice in round 5 of the Porsche Carrera Cup at Sydney Motorsport Park.

He was second in both practice sessions behind Nick Foster

Campbell had a best of one minute, 31.1585 seconds in the first session, pretty good compared to the lap record of 1:30.9042.

There will be qualifying today before the start of racing.

Campbell is in 10th place in the series at the halfway mark.

After this weekend, racing moves to Sandown in mid September.
