Calliope's field of dreams now under lights from season 2019

SOCCER: Calliope Football Club will now have the capacity to host night games at Liz Cunningham Park.

The installation of four brand new floodlights will brighten the prospects football under lights during the Football Central Queensland season.

Long-time Calliope player Michael Fearns said a previous president planted the seed.

And from there the towers grew, albeit amid some political mishaps.

"The new fields were on the agenda when I first started at Calliope six years ago," Fearns said.

"Barry Collins was the club president at the time and put in a big effort.

"Initially the lights were in the council budget, but withdrawn when the work started and that is when the federal politicians stepped in."

The lights cost approximately $160,000 and Fearns said it will have a positive effect on the growth of junior numbers.

"The club is looking to the future and hoping the Calliope High School sees a growth in juniors at Calliope," he said.

"Friday night football for the older juniors would seem feasible.

"The 60-plus training sessions is as important as the night time football."

Training commenced on Tuesday and Fearns encourages new players to come to training which is each Tuesday and Thursday.

"The ladies will train from 5.30-6.30pm and the men from 6.30-8pm with the men," he said.

"This is the first season in the club's history that they have trained on a purpose-built training field.

"So there is excuse now for not coming to training and waiting until the season is about to start before committing."
