Callide station powers up

CALLIDE Power Station staff are putting the finishing touches on the major overhaul of B station and readying the plant to operate at full capacity.

More than 500 contractors and up to 100 CS Energy staff worked on the project, which was the largest amount of activity at B station since it was constructed in the 1980s.

Site Manager Kevin Harney said the first of B station's 350 megawatt units returned to service in mid-May, and recommissioning of B2 had commenced.

“We'll be recommissioning unit B2 over several weeks to test out the new control system installed during the overhaul,” Mr Harney said.

“This involves some 'cold starts' of the boiler, so there may be a small amount of smoke visible from the chimney as we finetune the unit's systems.”

The Callide B overhaul included maintenance and upgrade works on the station to extend its life past 2023.

More than 270,000 hours have been worked on the overhaul, which covered all the major plant systems for unit B2, including the control system, turbine, condenser, generator, cooling tower and boiler; and the condenser on unit B1.

The newer 900 MW Callide C next door continued to generate electricity as normal while the B station was underway.

Final work is scheduled for a unit B1 outage in 2010.
