Bringing art and smiles to the hospital

FROM waiting rooms to hospital wards, our surroundings can impact the way we think and feel.

Art can transform a cold, clinical environment into a welcoming public space that encourages, enriches and empowers everyone who uses it.

The Art Gallery Biloela Hospital, with the support of Central Queensland Regional Arts Services Network, Banana Shire Council RADF, CQ Hospital & Health Services and Katrina Elliott Photography & Design, will host six exhibitions in the first 12 months.

Central Queensland artist Katrina Elliott witnessed first-hand the impact art makes in clinical environments during the development of the Art Gallery Gladstone Hospital.

The project has just seen its first anniversary and the outcomes were way more than she expected.

"My initial focus was on the patients, but I soon witnessed the wonderful effects it had on staff, visitors and the community," Ms Elliott said.

"As an artist, it hasn't been an easy road working in the health sector which is very complex and it requires lots of patience.

"The outcomes have far outweighed the tribulations.

"Now that I have templated the project in Gladstone, I wanted to share the opportunity with Biloela hospital and I am really looking forward to building relationships with another community."

The gallery will provide opportunities for three paid local artists in the Banana Shire, schools and the community with further funding to install larger public works throughout the hospital.

"The Banana region is full of diverse artists and the gallery's first exhibition will showcase the community's creative photographers," Ms Elliott said.

"As a professional photographer myself I wanted to challenge the community to create a story around their photo.

"By setting the theme, Grounded, it will inspire our photographers to think more about the purpose of their creation."

Ms Elliott's aspirations are to open an art gallery in all Central Queensland hospitals.

"Every hospital needs the magic of art on their walls," Ms Elliott said.

The opening of the Biloela Hospital's art gallery will be at 5pm on February 21 at the hospital's main entrance.
