MOTOR RACING: Kris Goos is working hard to stay at the top of the sport he loves.
The Biloela born and raised mechanic is the workshop manager for Triple Eight Race Engineering, home to Red Bull Holden Racing, the top team competing in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.
This year he has also taken on the role of crew chief, in charge of keeping things running smoothly on the track.
"The game is changing day by day and the competition is rising," Kris told the Central Telegraph.
"It's easy to look in and think it's all champagne and trophies, but there's a lot of hard yakka.
"Unfortunately the TV doesn't show when you're there all night fixing the car and we've definitely had to do that for sure."
The team has started the 2017 season in top form, with Commodore driver Shane van Gisbergen kicking off his title defence in pole position and first-place finishes in both races at the Clipsal 500 season opener in Adelaide last weekend.
Van Gisbergen and Red Bull teammate Jamie Whincup finished in first and second places respectively in last year's championship, with fellow Triple Eight Race Engineering workshop driver Craig Lowndes (racing under the TeamVortex banner) coming a close fourth.
"It's been a mega year for the lads," Kris said.
"We're dedicated to the cause, moving forward with new developments, just chipping away to be at the top.
"We'll do what's needed to stay at the front - if the car starts to go slow, we're all looking for new jobs."
Kris developed a love for engines growing up at the family home in Biloela. a grain crop and herb farm on Valentine Plains Rd.
"At the end of the day, farming just wasn't the right thing for me," he said.
"Mainly growing up it was dirt bikes. My brother and I did motocross up at Stoney Ridge.
"I'd always been around dirt bikes and then slowly got into racing cars out at the drag strip at Benaraby."
He got his first job as an apprentice mechanic at Reef City Ford, where he decided to do everything he could to achieve his goal of working with race cars, eventually leaving town at the end of 2003 after landing a spot on a V8 Supercar development series team.
"I just did what I could to get my foot in the door somewhere," he said.
"I didn't work there for that long because I'd spoken to multiple people trying to get my foot in the door.
"One of the level one teams soon picked me up and I started at Larkham Motor Sport in mid-2004."
From Larkham, he moved from team to team, building a name for himself.
At one point he worked for Dick Johnson Racing, before ending up at Triple Eight Race Engineering as the number one mechanic for Team Vodafone driver Jamie Whincup in 2011.
A name change to Red Bull Holden Racing Team and a three-year exclusive factory support deal with Holden at the end of last year led the team to where it is today.
"It was a mega decision for us which really shook up the history of the sport. For Holden to change their factory backing exclusively to us was a massive deal," Kris said.
"It's been really good to be involved with like-minded people who are happy to go that extra mile to win."
The team's next stop is the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne from March 23-26, before the second round of the Supercars championship in Tasmania on April 8-9.
