HOLLYWOOD stars Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson are probably the Big Prawn's most famous fans.
But they call it the Big Shrimp.
And now more than 3.8 million Americans know about the giant crustacean, after Kruger appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman this week.
She was on the show to promote her new film, Inglorious Basterds.
During the interview Letterman produced a photo of Jackson posing near the Big Prawn.
Kruger and Jackson had spent a night in Ballina during a road trip around Australia.
“We couldn't find a hotel and there was this giant shrimp ... and Josh goes, 'why don't we stay here?',” Kruger told Letterman.
“The police knocked on the car windows at five in the morning. He (Jackson) didn't wake up and I had to talk to the police officers, who were very nice, thankfully, and they let me go. And I didn't have to do anything.”
Letterman told his audience that the Big Prawn was 'life size'.
“The important thing to remember is that shrimp is life size,” he said, holding up the photo of the icon.
“That's an actual Australian shrimp. They are enormous ... it's a meal in itself.”
Ballina Tourism secretary Dave Heggie said many Americans would now be thinking about the Big Prawn.
“Ballina is now really famous for its Big Shrimp, as the Americans call it,” he said.
“There's no way in the world that it should ever be lost. It must be dismantled and rebuilt.
“More than 3.8 million people have just watched it and more than 5600 people have watched it on YouTube. Who knows how many of those people will come to visit it?
“We could never ever get this sort of publicity for a place like Ballina.”
