Aiken fires up to give Queensland an easy victory

NETBALL: A stunning 54 goals from 57 attempts by import Romelda Aiken propelled the Firebirds to an easy 69-52 win over the Mainland Tactix on the Gold Coast yesterday.

Aiken (pictured) netted 18 from 20 in the first term as young Tactix defenders Jane Watson and Zoe Walker struggled to contain the 1.96m Jamaican.

Mwai Kumwenda did her best at the other end with 40 goals from 45 attempts.

The win lifted the Firebirds (6-4) to third on the ANZ Championship table, ahead of the NSW Swifts (6-3) on percentage after they downed the top-of-the-table Vixens 54-50 in Melbourne. Shooter Susan Pratley led the charge for the Swifts, eventually getting the better of Vixens captain Biance Chatfield and English import Geva Mentor.

The loss by the Vixens snapped a five-match winning streak and means WBOP Magic can take top spot with a win against Central Pulse tonight.
